SWCAR the anomaly register for the South West

SWCAR aims to provide an accurate picture of the incidence of birth anomalies across the South West of England from Cornwall to Wiltshire.
Since January 2002 we have been collecting data on all suspected and confirmed congenital anomalies identified in utero, at birth or in childhood. We include any anomaly newly diagnosed up to a child's 18th birthday. In addition to live births and stillbirths affected by anomalies we also collect data on all terminations and miscarriages where an anomaly is present.
We aim to provide an accurate source of data on congenital anomalies to aid surveillance of birth defects and to act as a resource for research, audit and service planning.
Our region covers the newly-formed South West Strategic Health Authority (formerly Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire; Dorset and Somerset and South West Peninsula).
SWCAR feeds data to the National Congenital Anomaly System run by the Office for National Statistics.
SWCAR is a member of BINOCAR the British Isles Network of Congenital Anomaly Registers.
